The Risks of Combining Aesthetic Surgery

At first sight it looks ideal: In just one surgery you have your breasts augmented and saggy tummy firmed up.

However, performing several procedures in one go usually brings more risks. For this reason, surgeons here – despite some trends abroad – avoid performing more extensive operations together.

Safety first

The main reason is safety, as the client’s health can be compromised when more procedures are performed together. Treating large areas of the body, lengthy anaesthesia and higher blood loss bring high risks. ‘These factors can influence healing and the post-operative process, which in turn reduces the positive effect of the surgery,’ says Karel Urban, M.D., from the Esthé Clinic in Prague. In particular, clients who request more complicated procedures, such as breast surgery together with abdominoplasty, face refusal as Dr. Urban recommends each procedure be carried out separately with a minimum interval of 6 to 8 weeks between each operation, so the body has time to recover.

Winning combinations

Not all combinations, however, are rejected by surgeons and more demanding procedures may be performed in combination with a small modification without any problem. Typically, a facelift or breast augmentation can be combined with blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), for example.

The decision as to whether requested procedures may be performed together or separately is influenced not only by the nature of the surgeries, but also by the health of the client. The client always has to undergo a thorough pre-operative assessment on which the surgeon makes the final decision.

When you decide on a combination of procedures, it is important to choose an experienced surgeon and inquire about the technological capabilities of the clinic. If a client decides to have two procedures performed together, for example blepharoplasty and liposuction, the clinic needs to have the technology to perform both procedures together.

False economy

Despite the risks, there are clients who request a combination of complicated procedures and there are surgeons willing to perform these hazardous operations. But aesthetic surgery is a surgery like any other and it bears risks, which must not be underestimated. Like many 2-for-1 promotions, the benefits and advantages may not be as great as they initially seemed.
