Away with double chin!
Large and unsightly double chin is one of common problems which an aesthetic surgeon tackles either separately or as a part of more complicated treatment.
It may be a result of slack skin, fat pad in this area or the combination of both.
Many people view double chin especially as a problem of obese people, however there are many other influencing factors like age, genetic predisposition, reduced skin elasticity but for example also a short chin. In some cases double chin is not just an aesthetic problem for a person but it may also cause some discomfort. There are several methods of removal; the choice depends on a particular finding in every patient. We choose the type of surgery, depending if the client suffers only from slack skin or if there is also excessive subcutaneous fat tissue. Plastic surgery of double chin may be performed either separately or as a part of face and neck lift, says Libor Kment, M. D. from the Esthé Clinic in Prague.
If double chin consists of fat tissue and good skin elasticity is maintained, liposuction is usually sufficient for the problem area. Ultrasound liposuction has proven to be the best method for the area, says Libor Kment, M.D. However if skin and hypodermis are slack too, it is necessary to choose a surgery to stretch the tissue. The procedure – no matter if liposuction or skin stretching – may be performed under local anesthesia, or rather, in combination with analgosedation. It is a gentle technique of anesthesia applying medicaments intravenously to the patient and thus inducing a state when the client does not feel pain, drowse, breathe spontaneously and does not remember the treatment. Postoperative care is not demanding; it is recommended to wear an elastic wrap, usually for 1 or 2 weeks. Sutures are removed after 7-10 days.
Although the double chin surgery is not a very burdening treatment, possible complications, brought by every surgical procedure, must be taken into account. The most common complications include the risk of hematoma and swellings in the treated area. The complications may be prevented by adhering to postoperative instructions. As always in medicine, it is important to choose a respectable clinic and a reliable surgeon who will thoroughly inform you about the problem, dissuade you from the surgery or recommend you the most suitable method.
