Less means more
Many women suffer depression because they perceive their breasts to be too small. As a result, when they decide on augmentation they often request overly big implants.
Aesthetic surgeons encounter frequent requests for extremely large breasts and it is their task to correct the exaggerated expectations of the client and create breasts that look natural and well proportioned. Oversized implants bring a high risk of complications and problems that are very difficult to put right.
‘For a short while oversized implants can look beautiful; however, after just a few months the breasts sag due to the weight of the implants and the result is far from appealing,’ says Karel Urban, M.D., a surgeon from Esthé, a prominent Czech aesthetic surgery clinic. As the skin is usually very thin, it becomes possible to feel the implants and the edges can also become visible. He adds that the correction of sagging breasts resulting from inappropriately large implants is very difficult.
With breast augmentation, Czech women usually prefer a natural look and trust their surgeon’s advice. In other countries, however, the situation may be different. In the U. S., for example, the trend of exaggeratedly large breasts still prevails. There are many discussions among experts and most of them incline towards the side of restraint when choosing the size of implants.
What size is right?
Deciding on implant size is always individual and depends on the agreement of surgeon and client during consultation. Implants will augment every woman’s breasts differently; it all depends on the condition of the mammary gland and breast skin. ‘In some women, larger implants make a nice natural look; in slight women smaller implants need to be chosen to make the result look natural,’ Dr. Urban explains.
The size of the implants also influences surgery technique. If the breast is already sagging, a large implant would be of no use without a breast lift. Oversized implants cannot usually be inserted under the muscle and often must be placed directly under the mammary gland, where they can be felt or even visible.
Those who do not go with the recommendations of their surgeon and have the implants inserted by another who is willing to perform the procedure, often return to their original surgeon to request correction. ‘Fortunately, in this country it happens rarely and it is usually the inexperience of the surgeon or a lack of clients, which makes them perform risky procedures,’ Dr. Urban concludes.
And so the general rule for aesthetic surgery returns again: Sometimes less is more and it is better to follow the recommendations of an experienced surgeon than return later with unnecessary complications.
