Power-assisted liposuction

Liposuction is without doubt one of the most widely requested procedures in aesthetic surgery. This is because it is a relatively simple procedure, which yields very good results. Nevertheless, this is still dependent on the skill of the surgeon. Nowadays aesthetic surgery has several types of liposuction at its disposal.

Each liposuction technique has its advantages and in certain cases disadvantages. Liposuction does not solve obesity; it helps patients with an accumulation of fat cells on specific parts of their body. It is in no way a method to lose weight, but a technique that removes the proliferation of fat cells on target areas. These are mostly the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, hips, but also knees or arms.

Clients are often very slim women who are genetically predisposed to store stubborn cushions of fat, which are impossible to shift through diet or strenuous exercise. The technique removes this extra fat tissue from subcutaneous deposits. The disrupted tissue is then sucked out with a thin cannula with a diameter of 3-5 mm. The subcutaneous fat is sucked out from tiny cuts by repeatedly pushing the cannula into the tissues. This creates tiny tunnels after the fat has been sucked out, which should form a dense net, which in turn results in a large and symmetric reduction of the fat layer. The great advantage of this procedure is that the effect of one treatment lasts permanently. This is due to the stable amount of fat cells in adults, which means the fat cells do not reproduce, but merely change size and so their reduction causes a permanent effect in the specific area being treated.

Preparation:

Clients should meet several important criteria in order to be considered for the procedure: being within the recommended weight range, having stubborn pockets of fat, firm elastic skin, being in good mental and physical health. Liposuction can improve appearance and self-confidence; however, it is not a magic bullet that will solve all problems. In aesthetic surgery the preliminary consultation is the most important, as it allows frank discussion between patient and surgeon about all the potential methods and any possible effects of the treatment. If they do not meet the patient's expectations it is better not to undergo the surgery at all.

The surgery needs no special preparation. Three weeks before the procedure, patients should avoid drugs that influence blood clotting or bleeding. Do not eat, drink or smoke from midnight on the day of surgery. The patient must feel well and be in good health and surgery will be postponed if inflammatory skin disease, acne, eczema, or a fungal skin infection is present.

Surgery:

There are several types of liposuction, which all work on a similar principle: The area is filled with solution that expands the space allowing for disruption of fat cells. Individual methods then vary according to the way in which the cells are disrupted. Power-assisted liposuction is a relatively simple procedure using a special vibrating cannula. It vibrates slightly and eases penetration of the tissues. It is particularly good for suctioning areas where there are ligaments or where liposuction has already been performed.

Post-surgical care:

Immediately after the procedure swelling and bruising might appear, which fade away quickly. Patients usually wear elastic underwear. We recommend quiet and relaxation for the first 5 days after surgery. After this time the patient can return to his/her normal routine. The final effect of the procedure is visible in 4 to 6 weeks, after which patients will not have any further restrictions.

Complications:

Complications caused by liposuction are very rare. They can generally be surgical, e.g., swelling, infection, thrombosis, accumulated liquid in the tissue; or specific to the treatment, e.g., uneven skin, loose skin, changes in colour, hardened scars from the cannula etc.
