Between the 17th ad 21st day, the patient revisits the clinic, where the physician removes hypodermic sutures. We often use absorbable sutures, and in such case the patient does not return to the clinic before one month after the surgery, when special plasters covering the scar are removed. The patients can resume their usual activities involving small physical strain after 3 to 4 weeks from operation, more intense physical activities including sports can be resumed in 5 to 6 weeks. During 4 to 6 weeks, it is recommended to sleep on the back and use a bra without underwire.
How to prevent complications after breast reduction
Breast reduction surgery requires no particular preparation. Similarly to other types of plastic surgery, the patients need to stop administering medications reducing blood clotting, such as Aspirin or Anopyrin. From midnight before the operation, patients should not eat, drink and smoke. An exception are patients undergoing the operation in the afternoon, however, this restriction applies at least to 6 hours before the procedure. The skin should not be treated with any cream, underarms shall be shaven. The intervention cannot be made on patients suffering with acute acne, eczemas or fungus in inframammary folds and having acute symptoms of disease, and on women in an unfavourable health condition.
Even when pre-treatment recommendations are strictly observed, certain complications may occur. They include for instance hematomas or a partial loss of areola, which is, however, very rare. Similarly to other types of plastic surgery, wound infection may occur, scars in the inframammary fold sometimes do not heal easily. However, problems usually fade away within two or three weeks. Alteration of skin and areola sensitivity is not frequent and usually disappears in up to one year; in exceptional cases, it may persist permanently.
At our clinic, we often encounter patients from other institutes suffering from undesirable post-surgery consequences caused usually by mistakes committed by inexperienced surgeons. It may occur that a surgeon removes too much tissue, or removes breast tissue asymmetrically. The consequences are too small breasts compared to client’s wish or asymmetry of breasts. Another mistake is shifting the areolas excessively upwards, so that a bra cannot conceal them. Women should be very careful when choosing the clinic for their treatment. Correcting such blunders is a relatively difficult task.
